History of establishment

In order to ensure the stability of the quality of raw materials, from the early 20th century, the management board of OPC Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company conducted surveys of many medicinal plant cultivation areas and found that Bac Giang is a region with a climate and soil suitable for the development of many types of valuable medicinal plants in the country.

Starting with Kim Tien Thao (Desmodium styracyfolium (Osb.) Merr. Bean Family), the main medicinal material used to extract high-purity extracts to produce the current Kim Tien Thao Kidney Stone Treatment tablets under the “Ong gia OPC” brand. At that time, OPC chose the seeds and brought them back to cooperate with the Faculty of Pharmacy – Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy to conduct identification of medicinal materials. Then, OPC cooperated with its partner, the Tan My Commune Medicinal Plant Planting, Purchase, and Processing Cooperative in Bac Giang Province, to conduct large-scale planting through a contract to commit to planting according to standard procedures, ensuring quality and annual output.

On March 19, 2010, in order to expand the scale of operations, OPC invested in land and built a factory, establishing OPC Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company Bac Giang, located in Binh An Hamlet, Tien Phong Commune, Yen Dung District, Bac Giang Province with a total area of 2.6 hectares.

Main functions

Organize the cultivation, harvesting, processing, and extraction of medicinal herbs at the source. This is an important part of OPC’s strategy to ensure a stable supply of raw materials, and to focus on research and development of high-quality, effective, and safe herbal medicines.

Through OPC Bac Giang Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company, OPC has signed contracts to purchase hundreds of hectares of medicinal herbs from farmers. With the technical support of the local government (Yen Dung District Farmers’ Association) on GACP cultivation standards, OPC has created jobs and improved the lives of local people.

Building on the success of Kim Tien Thao, OPC is expanding this program to other medicinal herbs such as Ich Mau, Sinh Dia, and Ngai diep. This has allowed OPC to secure a stable supply of high-quality medicinal herbs for its core products.

In line with this development strategy, OPC has collaborated with the Faculty of Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, and the Ho Chi Minh City Drug Testing Institute on research to improve the quality and standards of medicinal herbs. This includes:

  • Identification of medicinal herbs
  • Establishment of standard technical files for medicinal herbs
  • Development of procedures for extracting standardized substances from medicinal herbs

Development goals

  • Achievement of GMP-WHO certification for the medicinal herb processing and extraction plant in Bac Giang.
  • Achievement of GACP certification for the medicinal herb cultivation areas in Bac Giang.
