Its scientific name: Leonurus heterophyllus Sweet is an herbaceous perennial plant in the mint family, Lamiaceae.
Chemical composition: alkaloid (leonurin, stachydrin), flavonoid (rutin, wogonin), saponin, Attar (mainly diterpene, sesquiterpene: caryophyllene, aromadendran and cadinan)…

Pharmacological effects:
- On uteri: Motherwort’s extract stimulates uteri
- On blood pressure: Motherwort’s extract does not directly influence but it reduces the adrenalin effect on blood vessels. The herb decreases blood pressure, especially during the early stages of pregnancy.
- On cardiac problems: Leonurus quiquelobatus and Leonurus cordia, the kinds of Motherwort offer beneficial enhancement to the human heart (specifically damaged myocardium).
- Antibiotic uses for cutaneous microbe: according to multiple Chinese medical research, Motherwort’s extract has one-fourth effect on inhibiting cutaneous microbe
- On nephritis and acute edemas: clinically, Motherwort cures some nephritis cases and edemas.
Indications: Motherwort’s extract is popularly used for menstruation regulation. Fructus Leonuri (Motherwort’s fruit) can be applied to treat diuretics, edemas, and migraines.
